On December 16, 1985, Sun Microsystems released the source code for NFS to non-Sun developers:

The 2.0 release is the first release of Sun's implementation
of the Network File System (NFS) to non-Sun developers.

This source is available on GitHub at https://github.com/rsc/nfs thanks to Russ Cox. The source tree included the contents of the volume Networking on the Sun Workstation, formatted in troff, which provided architectural and protocol specifications for the various networking services.
